At the recent PCI Convention, I sat in on the mental awareness portion of the Workforce Development Committee. I commend Todd Adams for taking the lead on this complex issue. Because mental health has no one-size-fits-all solution, we must vary our approaches to supporting each other.

Actively listening and opening our minds to someone else's situation is always the first step. As an industry, we tend to be mechanical in our approach to solving problems; however, listening to someone’s emotions is anything but mechanical. Too often, we avoid people and situations that make us uncomfortable even though we know there is a need for help. Taking time to observe, listen, and talk can literally mean the difference between life and death.

The daily news reminds us that oftentimes, mental health struggles spill over into the workplace. The burdens our fellow coworkers carry influence and affect workplace morale and productivity. As leaders and influencers in our industry, we need to be quick to recognize and support the valuable employees we work with. Your investment in employees and associates isn’t merely an investment in your bottom line. It is an investment in their family stability, the community and our society. Let’s all lean into this issue and challenge ourselves to be receptive to the needs of others and seek ways to help others build a bridge to brighter days.

Below are resources that you can use to learn more about mental health and how to help your employees and co-workers struggling with mental health issues.

PCIGS Blog: The Versatility of Precast Concrete in School Renovations

School building construction using precast concrete is undoubtedly becoming more popular. Over the past few decades, there has been a significant increase in the use of precast concrete components for various public buildings. This trend has a number of causes, and administrators and builders who are designing new schools can learn a lot from.

PCI Design Award Winners

Congratulations to our members who won PCI Design Awards this year! There were several projects across various categories that were able to win awards from our producers including the Gas South District Convention Center in Duluth, GA and the Baptist Hospital Campus in Pensacola, FL.

Mississippi State Studio Program

On January 27th, Mississippi State embarked on its 5th year of the PCI Studio Program. This year's program has 63 Architectural and Construction Sciences college students participating in a semester-long concentration on precast products. The studio project is a proposed museum located between the campus and the Courtyard Marriott along Route 12. To begin the program, presentations were given by Matt DeVoss of Jackson Precast, who covered the architectural side of the industry; Jake Weaver with Tindall Corp, who covered the structural and engineering aspects; and Andrew Westfall, also with Tindall Corp, covering the site and installation of the precast components. Afterward, students met with the presenters to ask questions and seek guidance on their designs. We have another engaged group of students who kept the presenters busy for a few hours answering questions. We love that kind of enthusiasm!

2025 Precast Show and PCI Convention

Indianapolis, Indiana, was the location of the 2025 Precast Show and PCI Convention. The convention always kicks off with committee meetings. This year, business was centered around students. The first Architectural Precast Competition was highlighted, with the top three winners presenting their designs to the Student Education Committee. Congratulations to the winners.

Another bright spot this year was the completion of ACI/PCI 319.  This document was a collaboration between ACI and PCI to develop a strictly precast code. Although the process will never truly be finished, as many updates and additions will follow, the team should feel a great sense of accomplishment for having developed such a massive resource.

In other news, the growing Project Precast event featured eight teams of four students each. With only three days to complete a project, the teams consisting of two architects, one construction manager, and one engineer develop from scratch a completed structure from concept to schedule. The assigned project was a parking garage associated with the Indianapolis Zoo. Congratulations Team Tindall! Great job!

With 1,039 attendees at the convention and 5491 attendees at The Precast Show, the future of the precast industry looks bright. The 2026 convention will be held February 2nd through the 6th in Kansas City, MO. See you there!

Alabama Transportation Conference

Alabama held the 68th Annual Transportation Conference on February 11th and 12th in Birmingham, AL. Over a thousand interested attendees from across the southeast filtered into the two day event. Every area of the transportation sector was represented here, including designers, administrators, contractors, and agency personnel. Starting the conference was keynote speaker Jared Perdue, Secretary of Transportation for the state of Florida. As has been the case for the last half a dozen years, the Honorable Governor Kay Ivey attended the Governor's luncheon and spoke to the assembled attendees about the state's progress in education and transportation. The education sessions began after the luncheon and focused on areas of interest in construction, traffic operations, road safety, and bridges. The conference, operated and developed through Auburn University’s Alabama Transportation Assistance Program, has provided well-rounded and educational information for the infrastructure community. Moving onwards and upwards, next year's conference will be held Feb 3rd and 4th in Huntsville, Alabama.

PCI Quality Control

PCI offers training courses (QC Schools) to prepare individuals for PCI personnel certification examinations. It is important to note that passing an examination satisfies only one of the requirements of personnel certification and that the final decision on certification is made independently by the PCI Quality Assurance Department.
