Background
After the original courthouse was burned down, Plaquemines Parish was in need of not only a new courthouse, but one that could be built quickly and was more secure than the previous structure. The new precast building is a four story, red-brick, glass, and concrete construction that faces southwest. Offices, courtrooms, judge's chambers, council chambers, conference rooms, work rooms, and other support sections are all located in the 40,000 square foot courthouse. With parking underneath and two levels above, the structure is elevated by nineteen feet. The first story is open, while the upper stories are supported by pillars. The courthouse is on the south side of the third story and the Parish Council Chamber is on the south side of the second story. The former courthouse's remains are on the west side of the building, which is situated on beautifully manicured grounds in the middle of Pointe a la Hache.
